Hysteria Lane is a fashion collection by London-based designer, Reverend Sophie, that explores the unjust stereotypes, taboos, and poverty of periods. The four pieces in this collection are made entirely from hand-dyed tampons. Reverend Sophie’s practice explores ways of creating conversation in society through the use of unconventional and questionable materials, as displayed through this miniature collection. Each piece has been photographed by Hannah Sommer in different public toilets both in London and New York, bringing the collection into a full circle. Finding grungy and rundown toilets creates a juxtaposition between the high-fashion garments and the surroundings, which translates back to the negative stereotypes often associated with periods. As periods and the use of tampons are often experienced by women and menstruating individuals with a connotation of shame a discretion, such as passing a tampon to your coworker secretly under the desk to avoid spectacle, this collection intends to embolden individuals and celebrate what is only natural and integral to the female and menstrual experience by turning what is often hidden into wearable art.
